Frequently Asked Questions
What does NAKID stand for?
No, Adult Kickball Isn't Dumb.
How does this kickball thing work?
Most sports and social leagues are similar in that they play a sport, followed by going to a bar afterwards. In addition, they'll have 2-3 parties (of which sometimes you have to pay to enter) and the occasional happy hour.
In NAKID, we DO play a sport (in our case, co-ed kickball) and go to the bar afterwards and eat, drink, and play flip cup (our real sport). We have 3 FREE parties per season (season kickoff, mid-season, and end-of-season parties) and we throw the occasional league happy hour. But, we take things a few steps further than every other league, and here's how:
- We often have FREE jello shots at the bar after your games.
- We raffle off prizes at some of our parties.
- We organize at least 1 Washington Capitals game each season.
- We rent out the Boomerang Bus for FREE fun trips in other cities like Annapolis and Baltimore or to a Wine Festival.
- We have a Beerlympics tournament every season.
- We throw a World Series of Pop Culture tournament.
Why should I join NAKID?
Because it is the best choice to fill your post-holiday winter schedule. Unlike other leagues out there, 95% of the money you pay goes back into the league and we have a great group of people who don't take the game too seriously. Sometimes we have FREE jello shots at the bar after your game! Plus we are the best run club and we offer a discount to returning players.
How much does it cost to join?
Winter registration just opened. Returning players could join for just $47 (per player, per team) while new players for $57. After October 4th, the price will gradually increase to max out at $72 (again, per player, per team) for everyone. We also give a discount of $5 off for each team you join after the first one.
If you have a company team you want to join, or want to bring 15+ players, please email nakid2009@gmail.com to talk about bulk player prices. If you manage a division or chapter with a competing league and are unhappy, please email nakid2009@gmail.com about moving to NAKID. We'd love to have you and will work to address any concerns you had with your old league.
What if I don't know anyone else in the league? Can I still play?
Of course! Even if you don't know what team to join, you can join "Any Team That Needs Me". We'll place you on a friendly team and you'll make some new friends on day one!
How long is the season?
The Winter season starts with the kickoff party on Sunday, January 3rd. We'll have 10 weeks of games after that and we'll be playing every Sunday or Thursday (depending on the team you join). The season will run until late March.
What if I don't like my team?
That's no problem. Just send us an email at nakid2009@gmail.com and we'll slide you over to a more fun team.
I have a bunch of friends that want to play - how do we get on the same team?
When you go through the registration process, you can see how many openings there are on each team. If you have enough friends, you should consider emailing us and starting your own team. We'll help you fill it up! Otherwise, just coordinate with yourselves on joining a team with enough available spots.
Are the bars and gym metro accessible? What metro stops?
Absolutely. The gym is about 2 blocks south of Dupont Circl (red line) and about 5 blocks north of Farragut West (orange and blue lines). Our sponsor bar, The Exchange, is 4 blocks from Farragut North (red line) and 2 blocks from Farragut West (red, blue lines). You certainly won't have to walk 20 blocks to get to your kickball game or bar.
Can I start my own team?
Absolutely! Just send us an email at nakid2009@gmail.com and include your team name, preferred shirt color, and day/time of choice and we'll do our best to accomodate.
I may have to miss several games - can I still join?
Most people miss a game or three. That's not a problem at all.
What are the rules?
Check them out in Microsoft Word format by clicking here.
How do I join?
Just click the Register Now link on every page, fill out your info, choose a team, and pay and you are in!
What is the registration fee for?
Equipment, t-shirts, parties, prizes, trips, recruiting, and the tons of other NAKID social events that we will be hosting throughout the season.
What's a "chapter"?
A chapter is a specific day, time, and location that teams will play. For instance, if you join on "Early Sunday", you'll play once a week (except holidays) on Sunday at either 2:30pm or 3:15pm at the YMCA in Dupont Circle. Each chapter has up to 8 teams, so there's plenty of opportunities to make new friends.
What exactly is the Boomerang Bus?
The Boomerang Bus is awesome. Run by Ride the Boomerang, it's a party bus, which involves us getting 40 people on a bus and drinking beer while it brings us to Baltimore, Annapolis, a Wine Festival, or just around DC. Once we reach our destination, it unloads us so we can bar hop for a few hours and play drinking games. When we're done, we load back onto the bus and it takes us to our starting point (usually our sponsor bar). Sometimes we rent 2 or 3 busses, which can get wild with 120 people bar hopping together!
When and Where do we play kickball?
We normally play at the YMCA near Dupont Circle (1711 Rhode Island Ave NW). As for when, that's up to you! We offer chapters on the following days/times:
- Sundays at 2:30pm or 3:15pm
- Sundays at 4:00pm or 4:45pm
- Thursdays at 6:30pm or 7:15pm
- Thursdays at 8:00pm or 8:45pm
Choose one or many, the more you play in the cheaper it costs per chapter.
What skills do I need to play kickball?
None! All levels of skill are welcome. Playing indoor kickball with NAKID is a fun way to compete with people in a sport that is truly a level playing field and then meet a bunch of new friends (both on the field and at the bar, afterwards).
How many people are on team?
At least 15 for indoor kickball and a maximum of 25. Teams may limit the number of players, but the price per player for those teams will increase.
Who refs the games?
We ask for volunteers for refs for games. Refs will get a pitcher of beer as thanks for their efforts.
Can I drink alcohol in the YMCA gym?
Sadly, no. It's prohibited by the gym.
Who are our sponsor bars?
Our sponsor bar is The Exchange in DC (1719 G St NW), which is just 2 blocks from Farragut West (orange/blue line) and 4 blocks from Farragut North (red line). It's 7 blocks from the YMCA.
What are the bar specials?
Listed below are our bar specials for this season. You can get these special prices only if you are wearing your NAKID shirt.
- Specials off all food on the menu
- $9 pitchers of Coors Lite
